Big Cypress Prairie

This weekend I experienced Big Cypress National Preserve on a swamp walk at sunrise. My guide taught me that Cypress trees are related to giant sequoias. There has been so much logging in Big Cypress before it was protected, that the old growth cypress trees are found only in certain strands. On this morning, I experienced a cypress prairie of younger trees and its myriad of bromeliads.

Do you see the patterns in this ecosystem? There is biologic order in what at first appears to be chaos.
